Dion : Tank Full of Blues  Here’s my story, it’s sad but true. It’s about a girl that I once knew. She took my love then ran around with EVERY single guy in town. That was 1961, and Dion had a big hit about a slut named Sue. These days, Sue would have her own reality TV show. Dion released Bronx in Blue in 2006, and Son of Skip James in 2007. Tank Full of Blues completes the trilogy of albums chocked full of blues and roots-rock tunes, sung by Dion accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.

Joe Cocker: Hard Knocks  is a collection of 9 all new songs plus a cover version of the Dixie Chicks’ “I Hope.” Produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox 20, Carlos Santana), Hard Knocks has the timeless ‘Cocker’ sound fusing rhythm and blues, soul, and pop into an undeniable infectious mix .

Doors : L. A. Woman (40th Anniversary Edition) (Rhino 2-CD) features a never-before-heard song, She Smells So Nice, which captures the band joyfully barreling through a full-throttle original before segueing into the blues standard Rock Me. As the song closes, Morrison can be heard chanting, Mr. Mojo Risin –an anagram of his name that was made famous during the bridge of L.A. Woman. The track was recently discovered by producer Bruce Botnick while reviewing the L.A. WOMAN session tapes.
In addition to She Smells So Nice, the second disc of the L.A. WOMAN reissue includes eight never-before-heard versions of songs from the album. Alternate takes of L.A. Woman, Love Her Madly and Riders On The Storm offer a fresh view on this landmark album, which was the group s sixth straight Top 10. The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of Riders On The Storm.

Grateful Dead: Dick’s Picks 33 Oakland Coliseum October 1976
Roll away the dew and pass the biscuits! Fresh from a year-and-a-half touring hiatus, and back to full, two-drummer strength, the Dead opened for The Who as part of Bill Graham s historic Day on the Green concerts in 1976. This 4-disc set which is among the cleanest soundboard recordings in the entire series captures both dates in their entirety, and features one of the most monumental medleys (and that s sayin something!) in band history with a 60-minute, 10-song journey through St. Stephen/Not Fade Away/St. Stephen/Help on the Way/Slipknot!/Drums/Samson and Delilah/Slipknot!/Franklin s Tower/One More Saturday Night on the first day. Day two offers excellent takes on two solo Garcia favorites, Might as Well and The Wheel, that were new to the concert repertoire and a particularly fine Ramble on Rose. Bill Graham had honored the Dead by selecting them to close the year s stellar series of Day on the Green concerts, and that perhaps coupled with the presence of formidable co-headliners The Who sparked some of the band s finest performances of the period. Never before at music retail, and one of the rarest volumes in the series!

Grateful Dead: Dick’s Picks 32 East Troy WI 1982 This 1982 date gets off to a flying start with the unusual medley sandwiching Sugaree between two renditions of The Music Never Stopped, and presents another rare pairing of Jesse Fuller s Beat It On Down the Line and the Memphis Jug Band s On the Road Again, two songs that were part of the Dead s repertoire way back in the mid- 60s when they were known as The Warlocks. That s set one; set two is mainly devoted to a ferocious medley of Playing in the Band/Drums/Space/The Wheel/Playing in the Band/Morning Dew. The complete show on two discs, from one of the Dead s (and Deadheads ) favorite venues and one of the rarest volumes in the Dicks Picks series, never before available at music retail!

The Little Willies : For The Good Times

Alex Chilton : Free Again The 1970′s Sessions
The late Alex Chilton was the soulful lead singer of The Box Tops (my baby she wrote me a letter) but he never had the opportunity to perform his original songs with the band. Although he was under contract with American Studios, he snuck into Ardent Studios to record his own music. This album is sort of the bridge from the Box Tops to his critically acclaimed group Big Star. The music is inventive and played with lots of spirit, some R&B, a little country flavor, and a wacked out version of “Jumping Jack Flash”.

Charlie Haden & Hank Jones : Come Sunday
16 years ago, Charlie Haden and Hank Jones released an album called “Steal Away”. It is a 5 star, must-own, collection  of spirituals, hymns and folk songs; duets for piano and bass. Come Sunday was recorded in 2010, just 3 months before pianist Hank Jones passed away. Ironically, there are a couple of Christmas songs (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and It Came Upon A Midnight Clear) which might be cool, but Christmas just ended! This album actually has superior sound to “Steal Away”, and you can always skip the Christmas songs until next December.
